St Barthelemy Church - Brinon sur Sauldre

This church has a particular feature in that it possesses a "caquetoir" (from the verb "caqueter" meaning to blether), a 3 meter wide gallery made of a tiled wooden framework on a stone and brick base, which protects the porch and stretches along the side of the nave and opens out onto the village.

Its construction dates back to the 15th century. At this time, the gallery was used to shelter parish meetings which were held at the end of the Mass with the bailiff as president. It was also used as a village hall, to shelter the market or as a resting place for parishioners having travelled a long way for the religious offices, or simply as a shelter for "blethering" after the Mass. This "caquetoir" is the last in existence in the Cher departement.
